Reuters | There are no boots on the ground at the newest port of entry between Mexico and Texas, which is under construction on the Rio Grande in the remote Big Bend National Park. That's because people who are crossing into and out of Mexico will show their papers to a machine when it opens in the spring. "This port of entry will leverage cutting-edge technology that we have and increase security in the area," said Roger Maier, Customs and Border Protection spokesman in Laredo.

AFP | Anti-narcotics agents working for the US government have laundered or smuggled millions of dollars in drug proceeds to see how the system works and use the information against Mexican drug cartels, The New York Times reported Sunday. Citing unnamed current and former federal law enforcement officials, the newspaper said the agents, primarily with the Drug Enforcement Administration, have handled shipments of hundreds of thousands of dollars in illegal cash across borders.

Numbersusa.com | The Government Accountability Office released a new report, stating that between 2006-2010, illegal aliens started 40% if the human-ignited wildfires along the U.S. - Mexico border. The study was carried out by the independent GAO, the investigative arm of the Congress, at the request of Senator John McCain of Arizona. The GAO investigated 77 of the reported 422 human-caused fires. Of the 77 fires investigated, federal officials concluded that 30 were ignited by illegal border crossers.

WT | Five illegal immigrants armed with at least two AK-47 semi-automatic assault rifles were hunting for U.S. Border Patrol agents near a desert watering hole known as Mesquite Seep just north of the Arizona-Mexico border when a firefight erupted and one U.S. agent was killed, records show.

L.A. Times | Mexican President Felipe Calderon's most enduring legacy may well turn out to be the death toll from his country's bloody drug war. Since 2006, some 45,000 civilians have died, and the body count continues to rise. The homicide rate increased by more than 260% between 2007 and 2010. And a new report by Human Rights Watch indicates that drug cartels and organized crime aren't solely responsible for the bloodletting. The military, deployed to protect civilians, may have caused many of their deaths, according to the group's study.

AP |  The chairman of the House oversight committee said Sunday that he could send subpoenas to the Obama administration as soon as this week over weapons lost amid the Mexican drug war. Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., suggested on "Fox News Sunday" that Attorney General Eric Holder knew about the gun trafficking operation known as "Fast and Furious" earlier than he has acknowledged. "Why are they denying knowing about something that they were briefed on?" Issa said. "Exactly when, the American people want to know, how did it happen?"

Examiner | In June 2011, it was discovered that two assault rifles sold under the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) program known as “Operation Gunrunner” were used in the 2010 abduction and murder of a Mexican lawyer. The victim, Mario Gonzalez Rodriguez, a high-profile attorney, and brother of former attorney general of Chihuahua, Patricia Gonzalez Rodriguez, was kidnapped in October by gunmen working for the Sinaloa Cartel. Over the course of two weeks, he was repeatedly tortured before being killed by his captors.

ATF Acting Director Kenneth Melson had sent a request for information to the bureau's chief counsel, Stephen R. Rubenstein, regarding allegations made against the agency by whistleblowers writing on a website called 'CleanUpATF.'
