US claims Iran behind rocket attacks on Baghdad's Green Zone

Sunday: 4 US Soldiers, 91 Iraqis Killed; 152 Wounded

With the loss of four soldiers in Baghdad today, the U.S. death tally now stands at 4000 American military deaths. At least 91 Iraqis were also killed and 152 more were wounded during the latest round of violence. In Baghdad, rockets targeting mostly the Green Zone left several casualties. Meanwhile, a series of attacks on mostly police units left a significant number of dead and injured in Mosul. Also, Iranian forces continue their attacks on rebel locations in northern Iraq.

Special Forces have Afghan drug lords in sights

British Special Forces are conducting covert operations against drug smugglers in southern Afghanistan for the first time. The operations represent a shift from the British military's long-held opposition to direct involvement in Afghanistan's drugs war. British Special Forces in Helmand province had previously been limited to targeting members of the Taliban leadership.

As U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney took a somewhat secretive visit to Baghdad today, Karbala experienced a major bombing attack that killed dozens of people. Several bomb explosions were also heard across the capital. Overall, 63 Iraqis were killed and about another 111 were wounded across the country. Seven Iranians were killed in the Karbala attack as well. Meanwhile, two American soldiers were killed in an IED attack while on a route-clearing mission north of the capital.

Iraq drops 'death squad' charges

A court in Iraq has dropped charges against two former senior officials in the health ministry who were accused of involvement with Shia death squads.Prosecutors said the court had decided there was insufficient evidence to proceed with the trial.The two men denied allegations that they had allowed death squads to use ambulances and hospitals to carry out kidnappings and killings.
