Thursday: 2 US Soldiers, 93 Iraqis Killed; 212 Iraqis Wounded

At least 93 Iraqis were killed and 212 more were wounded in the latest violence. Two mass grave were found in Duluiya, but the number of bodies was not reported yet. An American soldier was killed during a car bombing today in central Baghdad. Also, the DOD announced the death of a Marine in Texas; he died from wounds received in 2005 in Anbar province.

Although more bodies are stacking up in the aftermath of his security crackdown, Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki continues to threaten the Mahdi army. At least 71 Iraqis were killed and another 155 were wounded in the latest round of violence. Five American soldiers were killed in separate events.

At the outset, the numismatic history of the United States is as singular as its political history. Just as the new government was remarkable for the powers its Constitution did not permit, so the new U.S. coinage was unusual for what it did not depict. There were no representations of any political figures, ancient or contemporary. Odd as it may seem to modern Americans, the faces of Washington, Franklin, and Jefferson did not make it onto America’s earliest coinage. Such bygone greats as Caesar and Alexander were also notably absent.
