2.6 new Americans in 2009; 1 new birth every 14 seconds, 1 new immigrant every 36 seconds

NumbersUSA.com | Dec. 30, 2009

The Census Bureau reported today that the U.S. population has increased by 1% in 2009, adding another 2.6 million people. According to the bureau, the population is now 308,400,408, and the 2009 increase is due to an increase in births, amounting to a new American every 14 seconds.

"The majority of the increase is due to natural increase - - new births in the United States -- and we also have new people coming in through international migration, just under 900,000 this year," said Alexa Kennedy- Puthoff, chief of the bureau’s population estimates branch.

According to the report, on average, the United States takes in a new immigrant every 36 seconds.
